Oriental Poppies for Descanso Gardens

Oriental Poppy (Papaver orientale) Perennial up to four feet tall. Likes cold winters. Plants go dormant in summer, form new growth in late fall. Many named varieties are available.

Flanders or Shirley Poppy (Papaver rhoas) Annual growing from two to five feet. Broadcast seed into borders or large drifts. Make successive sowings from December through spring to provide spring and summer bloom. Makes a good cut flower. Keep fading flowers deadheaded.
